Community Banker Open Source Crypto Investigations - Part 2

Cryptocurrency-related fraud is increasingly reaching community banks through account openings, ACH activity, wires, card transactions, peer-to-peer payments, and customer complaints. Bankers may recognize the warning signs but still struggle to determine what happened, where the funds moved, and what information can be developed using publicly available “open source” resources. Resources are needed to investigate beyond the bank walls.

Bank records rarely tell the full story of cryptocurrency activity. This 2.5-hour interactive webinar helps bankers enhance cryptocurrency investigations using open-source intelligence (OSINT) tools to identify wallet activity, exchanges, online entities, geographic indicators, and potential criminal connections.

Designed for professionals with a basic understanding of cryptocurrency, this advanced session explores blockchain explorers, wallet attribution resources, scam databases, sanctions screening tools, domain research, social media investigations, and other publicly available resources. Through instructor-led case studies, participants will learn how to supplement bank data, strengthen SAR narratives, and develop more actionable investigative findings.

Participants will discuss assigned case studies, apply investigative techniques, and collaborate in breakout sessions to evaluate cryptocurrency-related activity, identify investigative gaps, and recommend enhancements to suspicious activity reporting. By the end of the program, attendees will be better equipped to trace activity beyond their institution's records and conduct more effective cryptocurrency investigations.

What You'll Learn

  • Comparing open-source blockchain investigation tools
  • Researching wallet addresses and transaction histories
  • Identifying linked wallet addresses and recurring counterparties
  • Developing a list of facts and assumptions and how to harden assumptions
  • Enhancing SAR narratives with wallet addresses, transaction hashes, platform names, URLs, and investigative findings
  • Identifying information likely useful to law enforcement
  • Creating internal referrals and investigative packages

Who Should Attend

This session is appropriate for BSA/AML and CFT officers, Fraud investigators, SAR investigators, Compliance officers, Deposit operations personnel, Information-security personnel, Internal auditors, Law-enforcement liaison personnel, and Bank employees who support cryptocurrency-related investigations. Tellers, yes tellers. Participants will require access to computer resources that can access the internet for investigation purposes.
